Если посмотреть на карту современной цивилизации, то мы увидим, что вся эта цивилизация (оставим в стороне оценочные суждения) располагается по берегам морей и океанов в приблизительно экваториальной зоне (плюс-минус градусов тридцать широты). В этом смысле можно сказать, что Средиземное море ― подлинный очаг зарождения современной экономической жизни всего человечества в целом. Поэтому не удивительно, что на его берегах люди живут, можно сказать, с незапамятных времён.

Это же относится и к древнему городу Яффа ― одному из старейших городов мира, неоднократно упоминаемом и в Старом, и в Новом Заветах. Яффа во времена активного судоходства была воротами в Иерусалим. И до строительства порта в Ашдоде это был один из важнейших стратегических портов Средиземного моря (именно поэтому в древности за него воевали то римляне, то крестоносцы, то арабы, постоянно изгоняя местное население).

Сейчас Яффа является частью территориального образования Тель-Авив-Яффа, но всё-таки этому городу удалось сохранить свою самобытность, которая ― прежде всего ― ощущается в его атмосфере. Это южный портовый город, где всегда светит солнце и где хочется по-настоящему радоваться жизни. Здесь огромное количество галерей, музеев, театров. Здесь также много ремесленных лавок и торговых точек самых разных мастей. О торговле поговорим отдельно, здесь же мне хочется показать, каковы эти улочки, где новые дома строятся на камнях от предыдущих.

Только представьте себе: здесь люди были всегда. У меня не было достаточно времени, чтобы как следует тут всё исходить, и большинство фотографий сделано через окна автомобиля. Но то, что это город пересечения множества культур и эпох ― это видно сразу.

If we look at the map of modern civilization, we will see that this entire civilization (leaving aside assessment judgments) is located on the shores of the seas and oceans in an approximately equatorial zone (plus or minus thirty degrees of latitude). In this sense, we can say that the Mediterranean Sea is the true birthplace of the modern economic life of all humankind. Therefore, it is not surprising that people have lived on its shores, we can say, since time immemorial.

This applies to the ancient city of Jaffa ― one of the oldest cities in the world, repeatedly mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments. Jaffa was the gateway to Jerusalem in the days of active shipping. And before the building of the port in Ashdod, it was one of the most important strategic ports of the Mediterranean Sea (that is why in ancient times, the Romans, the Crusaders, the Arabs fought for it, constantly expelling the local population).

Now Jaffa is part of the territorial entity of Tel Aviv-Yafo, but this city managed to preserve its identity, which is primarily felt in its atmosphere. This is a southern port city, where the sun always shines, and where you want to really enjoy life. There are a huge number of galleries, museums, theaters. There are also many craft shops and many different retail outlets. We will talk about trade separately, but here I want to show you what these streets are like, where new houses are built on stones from the previous ones.

Just imagine: there have always been people here. I didn't have enough time to get a good look at it, and most of the photos were taken through the car windows. But the fact that this is a city of intersection of many cultures and epochs ― it can be seen immediately.
