Что порой бывалому туристу делать с обычной русской провинцией?

Позвольте мне оставить в стороне идеи патриотизма, потому что я не страдаю ничем подобным. Я созерцатель и исследователь жизни. Ещё мне очень нравится наблюдать окружающий мир. В связи с чем я не пытаюсь делить его на «своё» и «чужое». Я вижу всё: и плохое, и хорошее, и красивое, и уродливое. Мир разный. И именно это меня в нём привлекает. И нет ничего более скучного и унылого, чем предсказуемый мир одинаковых вещей. А взаимодействую я с тем, что окружает меня, не пытаясь фантазировать, мол, «а в Париже щас весна...»

И тем не менее, русская (в данном случае применимо именно это слово) провинция по-своему тяжела для незадачливого туриста, поскольку обладает очень богатым прошлым... но от которого в настоящем осталось, мягко скажем, не очень много. В России вообще любят жить прошлыми победами, но я считаю, что прошлое не должно доминировать над будущим. Впрочем, с образом будущего в нашей стране уже давно большая беда, поэтому приходится иметь дело с той реальностью, что есть.

В этом смысле Кострома ― это очень русский город. Настоящая русская провинция (без каких-либо коннотаций), где разные слои общества, пересекаясь, создают сообщество, представляющее собой смесь промышленников-предпринимателей, крестьян, мещан, купцов, генералов и разной знати. Не случайно в этой связи вспоминается Александр Николаевич Островский (1823-1886) с его исконно русскими драмами, полными терзаний душ самых различных калибров. Мне ещё в детстве русские земли казались тягучими, вязкими, где жизнь не просто течёт медленно ― она никуда не торопится. Быт подчинён естественным надобностям, к коим относятся не только веления плоти, но и души (вообще-то здесь провинциальная культурная жизнь довольно насыщена), люди даже в городе существуют как в большой деревне, и остаётся только понять: а чем живут все эти люди?..

На самом деле я люблю Кострому. Здесь светло, красивая Волга, легко дышится и очень интересный базар. Мне нравится здесь бывать, это по-своему интересный город, хотя большинству обывателей я, честно скажу, так и не смогу объяснить, что же мне здесь нравится ― впрочем, как и в большинстве русских городов с их странной атмосферой. Кострома мне кажется умиротворённой ― не смотря ни на что. Может быть, город не столь симпатичен, как, скажем, тот же Санкт-Петербург, но всё-таки есть у Костромы своё ― патриархальное ― обаяние, делающее этот город не похожим ни на какой другой.

А ещё это весьма интересный исторический центр. Пожалуй, в России трудно найти второй столь подходящий для любителей истории и почитателей монархий город, ведь именно в Костроме началось царствование династии Романовых. Здесь много примечательных монастырей и памятников архитектуры. И, самое главное, город стоит на Волге, хотя здесь же протекает речка Кострома (на которой город изначально и строили). И стоит этот город в этом месте как минимум с середины XII века, хотя вот раскопки утверждают, что люди здесь жили и раньше. Кстати, город входит в «Золотое кольцо».

Не смотря на отсутствие в широком информационном поле, Кострома ― один из важнейших центров России, это один из тех городов, про которые кто-нибудь что-нибудь обязательно  слышал, хотя живёт здесь чуть больше четверти миллиона человек. Когда-то здесь выделывалось огромное количество видов льняных тканей. Сейчас Кострома знаменита своими сырными и золотыми ярмарками. Вы можете ничего не знать об обычаях края, но про Масленицу наверняка что-то слышали, и здесь её празднуют особенно на широкую ногу. Ещё в Костроме очень почитают Снегурочку (культ для меня странный, но вообще-то даже есть тематические туры). В общем-то, не смотря на свою тягучую патриархальность и отсутствие какого-либо пристального внимания со стороны федерального центра, Кострома ― живой город с очень самобытной историей, самобытными людьми и самобытной атмосферой.

Я никого не призываю обязательно посетить Кострому. Я только хочу сказать, что к посещению таких городов нужно быть действительно морально готовым. Жизнь в России вообще-то довольно сурова, поэтому ожидать здесь ярких красок и эмоций, пожалуй, не стоит. Но я точно могу сказать, что здесь находится Россия в самому русском её смысле. Хорошо это или плохо ― решать точно не мне.

What a usual Russian tourist can do with an ordinary Russian province?

Let me leave aside the idea of patriotism, because I'm affected nothing like that. I am a contemplator and researcher of life. Also, I love to observe the world around us. In this connection, I don't try to separate this world to two parts: "ours" and "someone else's". I see everything: bad, good, beautiful and ugly. The world is different, various. And that's what attract me in our world. There is nothing more boring and depressing than a predictable world of identical things. I interact with what surrounds me, not trying to fantasize that somewhere is better.

Anyway, Russian province is not simple thing for unaccustomed tourists, because this land has a great past... but not so great nowadays. In Russia they like to live by past victories, but I believe that the Past should not dominate over the future. However, we have the big trouble with a vision of the future, therefore we have to deal with the reality that we have.

In this sense, Kostroma is a very Russian city. Here is real Russian province (without any connotations) Here is real Russian province (without any connotations) where different layers of the public community create the mix of very different people: Industrialists-entrepreneurs, peasants, burghers, merchants, generals and various nobles. There is no coincidence that here, in this city we can remember Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky (1823-1886) with his native Russian dramas, full of torments of souls of various calibres. Even as a child, the Russian lands seemed to me like viscous, drawling where life does not just flow slowly ― it does not hurry anywhere. Private life is subject to natural needs, which include not only the dictates of the flesh, but also the dictates of the soul (in fact, here the provincial cultural life is quite eventful). Even in the city people exist as in a large village, and we just should to understand: what do all these people live?..

Actually I like Kostroma. Here is a lot of light, here is beautiful Volga and a very interesting Bazaar... I can breathe here easy... I like to be here, it's very interesting city with unrepeatable atmosphere, although (I'll be honest) I can't explain to most ordinary people what I like here - as I can't explain what I love in other cities of our country with their a strange atmosphere. Kostroma for me seems very quiet, serene - no matter the odds. Maybe this city is not so attractable (like Saint-Petersburg, for example), but Kostroma have own - patriarchal - charm, which make this town is unique.

Also, it's quite interesting historical centre. Perhaps, it is difficult to find in Russia a second city so suitable for history lovers and admirers of monarchies, because it was in Kostroma that the reign of the Romanov dynasty began. There are many remarkable monasteries and monuments. And (most importantly) the city stands on the Volga, although the river Kostroma flows here (on which the city was originally built). This city stands here at least a middle of XII-century, however excavations claim that people lived here before. By the way, the city is included in the «Golden ring».

Despite the absence of this city in a wide information field, Kostroma is one of the most important centre of Russia, it is one of those cities that everyone has heard something about. And a little more than a quarter of a million people are living here. In past a huge number of types of linen fabrics were produced here. Now Kostroma is famous for its cheese and gold fairs. You can not to know about local traditions, but you certainly to know about Maslenitsa festival, and here it is celebrated especially in a big way. Also in Kostroma the cult of the Snow Maiden is very reverend (this cult is very strange for me, but in fact there are thematic tours on this theme). In general, despite the drawling patriarchal character and the absence some close attention from the Federal centre, Kostroma is an alive city with unique history, original people and authentic atmosphere.

I do not urge anyone to visit Kostroma. I just want to say that you should to be ready for the visit in cities like that. Living in Russia isn't simple, therefore here are no bright colors and big emotions. But I can definitely say, that here, in Kostroma, Russia presents in the most Russian sense. Whether this is good or bad is not for me to decide.
