3 сентября 1980-го года на улице имени А.М.Горького в городе Южно-Сахалинск был открыт мемориальный комплекс, посвящённый советским воинам, павшим в боях за освобождение Южного Сахалина и Курильских островов от японских милитаристов в августе 1945-го года. Рядом, вдоль улицы, расположена аллея с бюстами Героев СССР, а за мемориалом раскинулся парк, который в настоящий момент здорово преобразили (ещё недавно он выглядел не столь ухоженно). По дорожке вверх, начинающейся практически сразу за основной группой монументов, можно подняться на верхнюю площадку мемориала, где установлены образцы военной техники, а также плиты с наименованиями воинских частей, кораблей и подразделений, участвовавших в освобождении Южного Сахалина и Курил ― эдакий музей под открытым небом. Любители военной техники смогут полюбоваться на интересные образцы, среди которых особо стоит отметить настоящий ИС-2. Также здесь установлен памятник дважды Герою СССР, главнокомандующему войсками в войне с милитаристской Японией маршалу Александру Михайловичу Василевскому. О памятниках мы поговорим в отдельной галерее, здесь же хочу отметить, что это очень приятное, спокойное место, где можно в тишине и покое зимнего вечера подумать о вечном.

On September 3, 1980, a memorial complex dedicated to Soviet soldiers, who fell in the battles for the liberation of southern Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands from Japanese militarists in August 1945, was opened on Gorky street in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Nearby with this place we can find the alley busts of heroes of the USSR and a park, which was recently put in order. On the path up, starting almost immediately behind the main group of monuments, you can climb to the top of the memorial, where samples of military equipment are installed, as well as memorial plates with the names of military units and ships that participated in the liberation of southern Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands ― it's some a kind of open-air Museum. Fans of military equipment will be able to admire interesting samples, among which the real ИС-2 (IS-2) is particularly worth noting. There is also a monument to twice Hero of the USSR, commander-in-chief of troops in the war with militaristic Japan, Aleksandr Mikhaylovich Vasilevsky. We will talk about the monuments in a separate gallery, but here I want to note that this is a very pleasant, quiet place where you can think about the eternal in the peace and quiet of a winter evening.
